The Feely-Touchy Game

What your baby will learn:
Tactile skills

1. Sit on the floor with your baby.
2. Take a large mixing bowl and put several things inside with different textures.
3. If you have a metal bowl or cooking pot, use it because the metal feels cool to the touch.
4. Here are some things that you can put in the bowl:
Pieces of cloth with different textures – smooth, rough, soft, furry
Sticky piece of tape
Package wrap that is bumpy
5. Take the smooth fabric out of the bowl and say, “this is smooth.” Give it to your baby and say it again. “This smooth.”
6. Ask your baby “will you put the smooth cloth back?”
7. Continue on naming each item in the bowl and then giving it to your child.
8. You can also take the item and put it on different parts of your body to see how it feels.
9. This game develops a sense of touch plus language skills.

Counting Buttons

What your baby will learn:
Counting

1. Babies love to touch and pull on buttons. Why not take advantage of this interest and use it as a teachable moment?
2. Wear a shirt that has three or more buttons on it.
3. Say or sing the following words and do the actions.
One button, one button
Let’s touch one button – put the baby’s hand on one button as you say the words.
One button, two buttons
Let’s count two buttons – when you say the word “one” touch the first button and when you say the word “two” touch the second button.
4. Continue on with the next button. Always touch the button as you say the number.
5. The number “three” is always fun for babies because many games that you play involve counting up to three.
