Games to play with 3-6 month olds

Memory Games

What your baby will learn:

Memory

1. Place two blocks in front of your baby. The blocks should be totally different in appearance.
2. Say to your baby “this is the red block” as you pick it up. (Describe the block you are picking up)
3. Take the red block and put it behind your back.
4. Make sure that your little one is watching where you put the block.
5. Ask your baby “where is the red block?
6. He will give you a sign that he knows where it is. Pointing and making sounds are ways that your infant can communicate with you.

Tapping Away

What your baby will learn:

Rhythm

1. Babies love to bang on things. This kind of activity develops hearing and listening skills.
2. Mealtime provides a perfect opportunity to encourage these skills.
3. Put your baby in the high chair and give him a wooden spoon. Watch how he will immediately start tapping everything around him.
4. Take a wooden spoon for yourself and join in the fun.
5. As you tap along with your baby, sing the words “tap, tap, tapping.”
6. This will make the game great fun and develop language skills as well.

Reaching

What your baby will learn:

Motor development

1. Babies at this age are always reaching for things. This is a wonderful opportunity to present a safe physical activity to help them grow.
2. Sit your baby on your lap and give her a favorite toy to hold in her hand.
3. Play with her and the toy by talking to her, jiggling the toy whatever it is and making the entire experience very pleasant.
4. Now, take the toy and hold it up a little higher than her hand can reach. Encourage her to reach for the toy.
5. This will strengthen her muscles and give her pleasure at the same time.
6. Be sure and give her the toy after she reaches for it. Praise her for getting the toy.

These games can be found in my book Games to Play with Babies which is available here.
